2012 Skipton Cruises

less 10% for all bookings paid for by 31st March

A warm Lizzie-Jean welcome!  When you arrive at Skipton Canal Basin for your cruise, the skipper will meet you on the tow path and welcome you aboard.  You will be served with a choice of hot or cold drinks and something to eat - like warm croissants or delicious home-made flapjack biscuits - while the details of the cruise (and safety information) are explained.  Then we'll "cast off fore and aft" and away we go!

Skipton Day Cruises

Please see the 2012 Dates page for available cruise dates.

Cruises are available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.  This year we have simplified our booking system with the same flat-rate charge for each normal cruising day.

Cost of cruises from Skipton in 2012:

£160

(boat with Skipper - for groups of up to 8)

Cruises start at 10.30 and return to Skipton around 4.30 in the afternoon. This includes time to go up and down the first Gargrave Lock plus a lunchbreak (walk to a pub/cafe, eat aboard, or enjoy a canalside picnic)

Most charter cruises from Skipton go northwest towards Gargrave and return to Skipton in the afternoon (Click here to see a map of this journey). An alternative day cruise goes southwards through Snaygill and Bradley towards Farnhill/Kildwick and return (Click here for a map of the Kildwick cruise). A surprise known only to canal users,  Farnhill  Wood is full of bluebells and wild garlic and looks stunning in Spring.

Pub lunches are available in Gargrave, Snaygill, Bradley and Kildwick. Please phone to discuss your boating day before booking.

Boating Tuition Cruises          . . . £175

These special cruise days provide tailor-made, hands-on experience of canal boating designed specifically for intending boat hirers or owners.  Come and try your hand at steering, mooring, locking (3) and winding with Lizzie-Jean's experienced skipper (a former teacher and adult trainer) by your side. Friends and families are welcome. Each day is individually designed, so please phone David Fitch to discuss and plan your specific requirements. (Click here for 'Contact' details).

Lizzie-Jean looks very special when decorated with bunting, banners and balloons (see 'photo below). If your cruise is to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday, engagement or anniversary, we can arrange decorations for an additional £10.  Champagne glasses will be made ready too - if required!

Cruises for Skipton Hotel Guests

For the convenience of guests staying at either the Rendezvous Hotel (Snaygill) or Herriot's Hotel (very near Skipton Train Station) cruises aboard Lizzie-Jean can start from the designated mooring area behind either hotel. Due to the extra time involved an additional fee of £10 is payable for cruises starting and ending outside the Rendezvous Hotel in Snaygill.

  Local Canal Information

Skipton is situated in the Aire Valley and is known as "The Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales".  The Leeds & Liverpool Canal follows the contours of the valley northwest from Leeds.  Above the famous Bingley 5-rise Locks  is a 23 mile stretch of canal with no locks.  However there are lots of swing bridges which need to be opened and closed by crew members of passing boats.

The picturesque Yorkshire Dales village of Gargrave, northwest of Skipton, is where the next series of 6 canal locks is found. The village has shops, pubs, a lovely cafe/sweetshop and stepping stones across the River Aire.  From Gargrave the canal continues in a south west direction as it rises to cross the Pennines and on into Lancashire through the "mile long" Foulridge Tunnel and more beautiful countryside.

Further information on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal can be found on the websites listed on our 'Links' page.
